Autism and Heritage, Culture and Creativity Policy - Briefing Report

Published date:

This evidence briefing has been prepared by the Independent Autism Reviewer of Northern Ireland to support the Department for Communities’ Heritage, Culture and Creativity (HCC) Programme, particularly the development of policy across Arts, Historic Environment, Public Libraries and Museums.

The purpose of this briefing is to bring together evidence, practice examples and emerging learning relating to autism, culture, creativity and participation. It considers the potential contribution of arts, cultural and creative activity to wellbeing, belonging, learning, identity and community life, and identifies practical considerations that may support greater access, participation and inclusion.

The briefing is intended to inform policy development at a formative stage. It does not seek to provide an exhaustive review of all available literature, practice examples or stakeholder perspectives. Rather, it draws upon a combination of academic research, policy documents, sector guidance, lived experience evidence and learning gathered through broader engagement with autistic people, families, carers, community organisations, cultural institutions and public bodies.
