The Independent Autism Reviewer is a statutory scrutiny role established by the Northern Ireland Assembly. The role provides independent scrutiny of how law, policy, funding, and services operate in practice, and reports to the Northern Ireland Assembly.
The Independent Autism Reviewer welcomes correspondence from autistic people, families, carers, professionals, and members of the public. Hearing about people’s experiences is important. It highlights patterns, gaps, and systemic issues, and ensures that the Reviewer’s work reflects the realities of autistic people, families, and carers across Northern Ireland.
All correspondence is read and considered. While individual replies may not always be possible, every effort is made to provide a timely response where appropriate.
Scope
The Reviewer’s role does not include handling individual complaints, resolving personal cases, or providing assessment, determination, or representation in relation to individual circumstances. This includes medical, clinical, social care, legal, or other case-specific matters. Responsibility for these matters rests with the relevant organisations.
Where appropriate, the Autism Reviewer’s Office may provide general information about relevant organisations or processes. This does not involve advising on individual circumstances or decisions.
Individual experiences are considered as evidence of how systems operate in practice. Correspondence is used to identify patterns, risks, and systemic issues, which inform and support independent scrutiny, reporting, and advice to the Northern Ireland Assembly.
Raising concerns
Concerns about individual experiences should be raised directly with the relevant organisation through its complaints process.
If concerns are not resolved or you remain dissatisfied after completing that process, you can contact the Northern Ireland Public Services Ombudsman (NIPSO), who has the authority to investigate unresolved complaints about public bodies. More information is available at: https://www.nipso.org.uk
Why your correspondence matters
Your experiences contribute to a clearer understanding of how systems operate, including where responsibility is unclear, delivery is inconsistent, or outcomes are not visible. This supports independent scrutiny and strengthens accountability across government.
